Open Source Software is widely distributed on server's for the following reasons:

• Designed by technical people for technical people/tasks
• Innovative
• Ease of administration
• Bug Fixes/Reporting/Patching

This is not to say that OSS is perfect for all server apps, sometimes the big vendors have the time and money to develop features not commonly deployed. ORACLE has a lot of these.
