Gift Economy?

High Level OSS Presentation:

* What is Open Source?

   * OSI definition

   * view source

   * change source

   * no limit on usage

   * free to redistribute
     -- source of "free" as in beer
        effectively sets cost to 0

* OSS vs. Free Software

   Catholics vs. Protestants

   Free Software

     * Software should be free as in speech

       -- look up elaboration

     * knowledge of what is on computer .. just as you should know the ingredients
       of a dish, or the components of a drug

     * not considered business friendly -- even though there is nothing
       in the free software movement which expressly forbids charging for
       software

   Open Source

     * Quality of software

     * Freedom to view the software and change it to protect against bugs etc.

     * Rapid Development

     * Cathedral versus Bazaar

     * Free as in Beer

       nothing innately free in software, not longing to be free (as
       FSF people might say), but instead consumers want it to be free
       like we all wish beer was free.

     * Proprietary tends towards monolithic design, Free tends towards
       small interworking parts. (The Art of Unix Programming)

  !! * Brief on Politics of Open Source

* Open Source Business Models

  * Services

  * Distribution

  * Documentation

  * Training

  * Licensing

  * Dual-Licensing

  * Bundled solutions (hardware/software -- IBM model)

* Open Source Licenses
  * GPL
  * LGPL
  * BSD (New) vs. BSD (Old)
  * Mozilla License?  Apache License?

* Why OSS for software consumers

  * Business

     * If it's free it's not worth anything
       !!* Allegory of the Syrian Carpet Merchant

       * Internet runs on OSS

       * Apache

       * Brief History of Open Source

     * The costs of proprietary software

       * Maintenance

       * Customization

       * Customer Service

       * Managing Risk

       * Vendor Lock In

       * Compatibility Failure

       * Scalability (Hotmail Transfer)

       * What are you paying for when you buy proprietary software?
         Sales and marketing mostly.

     * Why use OSS?

       * Free

       * Server Side
         * Designed by technical people to meet real needs
         * Innovative
         * Designed for administrators to administrate
         * Bug fixes/reporting

         * Not: Not always as developed as some areas (ORACLE in
           RDBMS's)

       * Desktop Side
         * Don't use most features of big products
         * Not locked into platform
         * Standards compliant
         * Tends to be Cross Functional
         * MS Office Bug
         * Customizable if you can generate enough interest
         * Security/Privacy

         * Not:  Retraining
         * Not:  Lack of functionality
         * Not: Lack of massive interest slows development
         * Not:  Less innovative
         * Not: Not standardized for platform (2 DE, 50 Window Managers)
         * Not: Lack of PIM-type applications

* Why OSS for software suppliers

   * Costs for software suppliers

   * Add'l cost for IP management

   * Failure of IP

   * Difficulty in protecting against hackers

   * Hard to break into US Market to compete against existing
     proprietary firms.

   * Refer to Document

   * Project should be huge or very highly specialized (admin software
     for daycare centers), cause if it isn't an Open Source company
     can/will undercut you.

     -- TurboTax as Open Source .. the program isn't the innovation,
        it's the data .. so Open Source doesn't necessarily add all
        that much value, unless you developed a system which could be
        extended to other countries and eventually got other people to
        do TurboTax Europe etc.

* Why OSS for developers in Armenia

   * Publicity

   * Experience

   * Proprietary doesn't work in local market, nor in developing markets

   * Hard to break into US market if competing w/ existing proprietary vendor

   * Fun

* Why OSS in Armenia

   * If cost of software is 0, what advantage free software?
   * Windows in Armenian
   * ??

* OSS vs. Proprietary Summary

   * The costs of developing proprietary software

   *

   * Summarize points

* Case Studies

   * JBOSS
     * Documentation/Training

   * arsDigita
     * Education/Services/Flat Fee

   * RedHat
     * Distribution/Documentation/Certification/Training/Services

   * SAP/ORACLE
     * Proprietary/Services

   * SleepyCat Software
     * Services/Dual Licensing
