Have you been reading Slashdot lately? This is a pretty common topic of discussion. Check out this discussion for some interesting comments about X11 etc. IMHO the problems w/ memory (and some would say that there are no memory problems), or performance (the main argument for putting userland code and running it in kernel space) are largely obsolete, and becoming Moore (hah!) obsolete by the second. These issues were a problem as late as 3 years ago, but I've never had a problem with X since before my 500 Mhz Celeron days. That is just my 12 Dram (2 cents, although with the fall of the dollar who knows how much it will be worth tomorrow).
